If you’re preparing for your first massage therapy appointment, it’s natural to have questions about what happens before, during, and after your session. At my Soul and Body, I want you to feel comfortable, informed, and relaxed every step of the way.
This guide explains exactly what to expect during your massage appointment so you can arrive feeling confident and ready to enjoy the benefits of therapeutic massage.

Before Your Massage Appointment
Before you arrive, you’ll receive an electronic intake form via MassageBook after your appointment is confirmed. Completing your form in advance helps us better understand your health history, preferences, and massage goals.
When you arrive at the office, we’ll review your intake form and discuss:
Your wellness goals
Areas of pain, tension, or stress
Pressure preferences
Any injuries, sensitivities, or medical concerns
Whether you’re seeking pain relief, stress reduction, relaxation, or muscle recovery, your session will be customized to meet your needs.
What Happens During a Massage Session?
We’ll show you to the massage room and explain the process before stepping out to allow you privacy to prepare.
You may undress to your personal comfort level. Some clients fully undress, while others prefer to leave undergarments on. Either option is completely acceptable.
You will always be professionally draped with a sheet and blanket throughout the massage.
Only the area currently being worked on will be uncovered and then properly re-covered afterward to ensure your comfort and privacy.
Once you’re ready, you’ll lie comfortably on the massage table under the linens before your session begins.

Your Massage Experience
Every massage session is personalized based on your goals and areas of concern.
Depending on your needs, your massage may begin with focused work on the:
Neck and shoulders
Back and lower back
Head and scalp
Face and jaw
Arms and legs
Some sessions are designed primarily for relaxation, while others focus on relieving muscle tension, chronic pain, or restricted movement.
Massage Oils and Aromatherapy
I typically use a light jojoba oil blend and can combine it with or personalize it with therapeutic-grade essential oils to promote relaxation, per your preference.
For clients with allergies, sensitivities, or fragrance preferences, I also offer:
Unscented massage oil
Hypoallergenic lotion options
Communication During Your Massage
Your comfort is extremely important throughout the massage.
Please let me know if:
Pressure does not feel comfortable
You experience pain or discomfort
You feel too warm or too cold
You need additional support or pillows
You would like adjustments to music or room settings
While some focused therapeutic massage techniques may create a mild “good ache” in tight muscles, massage should never feel sharply painful.
You are always encouraged to communicate openly so your session can be both safe and effective.
You may also request that certain areas not be worked on. For example, some clients prefer to avoid foot massage due to ticklishness or sensitivity. This is completely normal, and your preferences will always be respected.
Feel free to bring your own music if it helps you relax. This is your time to unwind and recharge.
After Your Massage Therapy Session
Most clients leave feeling deeply relaxed, calm, and refreshed after their massage.
You may also notice:
Immediate reduction in tension or discomfort
Improved mobility and flexibility
Continued improvement over the following 24 - 48 hours
Drinking water, gentle stretching, and rest after your massage can help support recovery and prolong the benefits of your session.
Scheduling Future Massage Appointments
After your first visit, you can conveniently schedule future massage appointments online anytime through MassageBook.
We look forward to helping you relax, reduce stress, and feel your best.
